Renowned Chinese artist Sheng Qi lived in exile in Europe for a decade after the Tiananmen Square massacre. Before fleeing China, however, he left a piece of himself behind, literally — he buried his pinky finger in a porcelain pot. While in exile, the digitally challenged artist made a series of iconic black, white, and red paintings with a stark palette, a visceral, thick use of paint, and images of the casualties of Communist oppression. This exhibition features paintings made over the last three years, reflecting the current cultural and historical moment.
