Art First Generation: Art in Claremont 1907-1957
-
- Phil Duke, Sunlit Valley, Courtesy Claremont Fine Arts
Nestled 30 minutes outside of the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles lies Claremont — not known for much other than some great old houses and reputable art colleges. But as surely as women were muses for Picasso, the rolling mountains and tree-lined streets of that setting inspired entire generations of artists. First Generation: Art in Claremont is a survey of the city's under-appreciated topology and the long tradition of artistry that it has inspired. Other than Millard Sheets, the exhibited artists might not be household names (Hannah Tempest Jenkins, anyone?), but the weight of their talents holds a place in history.
