Film Gozu (2003)

Takashi Miike's jarring phantasmagoria of Yakuza and horror, Gozu is not for the queasy or the quaint. It begins simply: Mafia stooge Minami is assigned to dispose of his now-deranged mentor. But the story's logic is quickly trumped by a deference to excess. The marked higher-up dies without Minami's help. A see-it-to-believe-it hunt ensues, as Minami meets a slew of unsavory folks — a bovine spirit, a supersoaker innkeeper, and, finally, the uncannily transformed fugitive. Gozu draws on von Trier and Lynch, as well as Miike's compatriot Seijun Suzuki.
