Film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

With its expressionistic dreamscapes and surreal sets, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a masterstroke in art direction. This classic horrror film, which rose from the ashes of World War I, tells the dark tale of the titular hypnotist (Werner Krauss) and his traveling sideshow. Among Caligari's band of fetshized freaks is the sleepwalking patient Cesare (Conrad Veldt). When Cesare discovers that the doctor is ordering him to murder in his sleep, the film takes off in unexpected directions, leading to an innovative and twisted ending.
