In his third feature Oasis, quietly audacious director (and former South Korean Minister of Culture) Lee Chang-dong supplies transcendent snatches of life's little sweetnesses. The film orbits the love between two outcasts: a mentally handicapped young man recently released from prison, and his hit-and-run victim's daughter, who herself has cerebral palsy. Harsh, yet entirely captivating, the film achieves an awkward, otherworldly honesty, its events taking place as if on another planet.
