George Hurrell shot studio stars as they are remembered today: glamorous, graceful, and a tad theatrical. With his sophisticated black-and-white blowups, "The grand seigneur of the Hollywood portrait" made marketing these larger-than-life personalities an elegant enterprise. As studio photographer for behemoths MGM, Warner Brothers, and Columbia during their '30s and '40s heyday, Hurrell took pictures of everyone who was anyone, from heroic, robust men (Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable) to well-lit, well-positioned ladies (Rita Hayworth, Greta Garbo). The California Heritage Museum honors his achievements by displaying more than 60 classic images. Completing the time warp are facsimiles of Hurrell's studio and a film series.
