- Sympathy for the Devil
Simple artistic arithmetic leads you to guess that the anarchic Sympathy for the Devil pairing of the pre-Altamont Rolling Stones and newfound Maoist Jean-Luc Godard is a Molotov cocktail of a movie about the making of a song. For the zealous society surveyor Godard, the creative "reportage" allows for a puzzle-piece explosion of '60s fixations: Black Power provocations, an overly-officious voice reading a pulp novel aloud, mouthpiece-youth with Marxist and pornographic posturing, and counterculture aesthetics everywhere. Spliced with the skeletal structure of the Stones rehearsing and recording, the ensuing assessment is replete with jungle drums and Jagger yelps.
