From Do Make Say Think's bombastic guitarkestras to the Dears' Morrissey fixation, most of the Broken Social Scene-related bands are fans of the Grand Romantic Gesture. But Stars turn adolescent heartache into sweeping, heroic drama more than anyone else to have emerged from Canada's preeminent indie-rock hydra. On the band's new downloadable EP, Sad Robots (commodity fetishists can grab a hard copy at the merch booth), Amy Millan and Torquil Campbell sound like Harriet Wheeler and a gothy Roddy Frame trading diary entries over gorgeous electronic ephemera. "14 Forever" says it all — this is teen angst bandaged in digital gauze and bouncy woodblocks. Here's to the new New Romantics.
