Note:
A closing reception featuring deep art historical thoughts from Shana Nys and even deeper psychedelic glitches and grooves from Nalepa, takes place Friday, November 21 from 7-9:30pm.
Any viewer beholding Surface Sounding without background information would likely believe all the art was selected by a single gatekeeper, so cohesive and connected is the collection. In reality, the show's custodian, Janet Levy, asked ten separate curators to select one artist each in order to address the "surface" theme. The result is an enchanting grouping of photography, sculpture, painting, collage, and video, with each work challenging the sense of sight and transcending the confines of its medium. These pieces reverberate visually, but upon contemplation also reveal deep conceptual effects.
