Charlie Roberts is a consummate collector of images, with an organizational system resembling the interior of a Whitman's Sampler. He perceives the world of people and things as a philatelist does, sifting through an unwieldy compendium of faces, hairdos, boots, magazines, art, animals, vehicles, potables, and foodstuffs, and then using gouache to depict portions of this array with varying degrees of fidelity. His rough-hewn style is both complex and sketch-like, and he tends to arrange his images in loose grids that recall tattoo flash sheets or the study pages of an artist's notebook. His inexhaustible patience and enthusiastic obsessive compulsion combine to great effect, displaying a childlike curiosity and wicked sense of humor.
