Art James Gobel: Happy Hour

Steve Turner Contemporary on the Miracle Mile lets its hair down this month, showing new work by James Gobel, portraying portly, hairy, gay men known as bears, drinking beer, wearing flannel shirts, and cavorting with abandon. Building on his earlier work exploring aspects of gay subculture, the San Francisco-based artist often uses non-traditional materials such as textiles in his paintings, conflating gender-based associations of craft and comfort with the shifting perceptions of bear culture, in which teddys discover their inner grizzlies.
