Entering Mark Dean Veca's site-specific installation at Otis College's Ben Maltz Gallery is like stepping into a psychedelic playhouse filled with surreal pop-cultural cartoons. A master of large-scale painting, Veca creates environments that are all-encompassing and combine a flair for color and design with a Kelly Wearstler-like whimsy — but without the overpriced hotel-bar drinks. Veca's highly evolved graffiti and street-art aesthetics work in tandem with a perfectly executed trompe l'oeil technique, transforming traditional white boxes into spaces that simultaneously titillate and confound. On opening night, Bruce Yonemoto's new video screens in the plaza outside the gallery.
