Art Marco Brambilla: Living the Dream

Marco Brambilla's newest video pieces live up to his reputation for supersaturated maximalism, combining, recombining, randomizing, and manipulating found and sampled film footage into looped digital audio/video projects dubbed "video murals." Taking on the hypocritical link between consumerism and religiosity in Civilization, Brambilla portrays a journey between Heaven and Hell through floating gods and futuristic architecture, nature and urban blight, mountain passes and muscle pageants. Cathedral, which takes place at a mall, has rougher and more ambient audio, exploiting a conversational buzzing that reinforces the hive/mall metaphor; at the same time, it's both hypnotic and charming, synching well with its multi-frame, kaleidoscopic, insect-eye perspective.
