Considering the precision and mastery of detail in the work of Richard Amend and Christopher Martin Hoff, it should come as no surprise that both previously explored photorealism. These days, however, the West Coast-based painters have shifted from painstakingly lifelike depictions to more painterly, stylized ones. For this two-pronged exhibition, the artists hold the postmodern urban landscape as subject and inspiration, with Amend opting for a more romantic approach and Hoff choosing a colder, more detached aesthetic. Lawrence Asher Gallery juxtaposes their solo shows, comparing their like-mindedness while calling out their stylistic differences and reminding us that there's more than one way to skin a city block.
