Even Robbie Conal's most fervent admirers tend to see his work primarily through their car windows. His trademark posters — featuring his unique style of portraiture (thick black lines, physiognomic flaws intensified) and knack for satirical puns (Starr Fucker; Read My Apocalips) — have festooned overpasses and transformer cases in SoCal and beyond for almost 40 years. But few know about his parallel track as a gifted studio painter, where his political wit meets a deep understanding of art history and a talent for impasto, bold color, and complex symbolic narratives. Now a much-anticipated survey of Conal's lengthy career gives audiences the chance to contemplate all of his talents in stationary comfort.
