The 2008 installment of the California Biennial should come with an anxiety-attack warning label. In a way, it does, with Patrick Hebert's sprawling outdoor installation of customized lawn signs describing an array of psychological states. Inside, the volume of work addressing concerns about war, the environment, and human rights raises blood pressure to a degree that even curator Lauri Firstenberg couldn't entirely foresee; taking in everything from the fraught new paintings of Raymond Pettibon and Daniel J. Martinez's nerve-shattering animatronic sculpture to an ingenious and entertaining video chamber by Edgar Arceneaux and a film from legend Bruce Conner, you just might forget to breathe — but it's worth taking the risk.
