The punk-rock landscape encompasses everything from radical politics and DIY culture to abrasive antics and self-mutilation, and Against Me!'s current tour is a microcosm of the community. Ted Leo's cred, relentless tour schedule, and catchy songwriting — equal parts reggae and mod — make him the poster boy for pop-punk's maverick spirit. With a growing catalog of protest songs (and songs about protest songs), Against Me! offer activist punk for a new generation. Wales' Future of the Left, meanwhile, hew closer to the Iggy & the Stooges model, stomping out primal rhythms while spewing invective-laden tales of losers, freaks, and, well, punks.
