Avant-garde singer and composer Meredith Monk's extended vocal techniques obliterated the boundaries of language, creating otherworldly landscapes awash in grunts and wails. Drawing inspiration from processionals of Buddhist stupas, Moses' journey up the 4,000 steps of Mt. Sinai, and the Tawaf around the Ka'Bah in Islam, Songs of Ascension explores rituals that evoke spiritual transcendence. In true Monk style, this staging is unflinchingly ambitious: the Meredith Monk Vocal Ensemble integrates Ann Hamilton's sensuous multimedia installation, the Todd Reynolds String Quartet, and a 20-singer choir hand-selected from CalArts' voice program at the Herb Alpert School of Music.
