At a venue steeped in history (Tom Waits was discovered here during amateur night), the lighthearted, Brighton, England-based Fujiya & Miyagi provide live sonic proof of the humor and musical chops found throughout their excellent third album, Lightbulbs. The Krautrock-influenced band plays danceable, percussion-driven tunes that make even the laziest bodies move to the beat. Singer David Best's whispered vocals are conspiratorial, and his playful lyrics are all the more delightful because of this deadpan delivery. It's as if these guys are making a joke about themselves — although they clearly take making good music very seriously.
