Peter Whelan's latest work, The School of Night, cleverly glides between the modes of traditional murder mystery and avant-garde theatre. As much a history lesson as a guilty-pleasure thriller, the play centers on 16th-century Elizabethan literature and politics, and has a subplot that would make Sherlock Holmes proud. The story revolves around the brutal murder of Christopher Marlowe, a 29-year-old playwright and contemporary of Shakespeare whose death might be a result of his homosexuality, his "free-thinking" affiliations, or possibly his inclination toward pub brawls. Whatever the motive, this is one whodunit where — rest assured — the butler didn't do it.
