Christopher Pate is interested in the relationship between maps and landscapes, as well as the broader discourse between the real quality of a place and the idea of it. A perfect example is the notion of "flyover states," the vast swath of America between the glimmering poles of NYC and LA — coastal residents likely perceive these states in a way that locals disagree with. Pate uses these memes as the armature for a mixed-media series that incorporates found road and topographical maps, elements of drawing and painting, and vintage souvenir textiles rife with vernacular symbols. The result is a visually dynamic choreography that deconstructs representations of place and makes us question our own perspective.
