The 11th Freewaves media-arts festival, dubbed "Hollywould," is a kind of triple-dog dare to Tinseltown boulevardiers, challenging them to engage with the splashy, spiky world of avant-garde digital and performance art. The event sets down stakes everywhere from nightclubs (King King) to galleries (LACE) to the Roosevelt Hotel pool — with hookah and postcard stores and a host of outdoor walls and doorways in between. Freewaves' flood of screenings and events, meanwhile, breathes new life into the term "street culture" and finally turns the Walk of Fame into the mammoth sensory orgy it was destined to be.
