San Diego artist Kelsey Brookes' recent work resembles the slashed daydreams of a flower child: bright swathes of colors splash onto white backgrounds. Disturbing details — clawing nails and animal faces, for instance — betray a singular vision obsessed with the fusion of deceptively soft and secretly violent material. "I used to be a very well-rounded person," he says in a recent release, "but now all I do is paint and obsess over minute details." Yeah, that and paintings that look as powerful on a wall as they do on a silk-screened t-shirt.
