Bands like the Ponys and the Black Lips prove it's possible to retain classic conventions while ditching predictability, but In the Red Records' own King Khan & BBQ Show pull this feat off with unparalleled earnestness and passion. The group's formula is simple: BBQ handles most of the vocal duties while playing rhythm guitar and kicking a bass drum, and Khan plays lead guitar. The duo's setup might sound like that of a novelty act (the goofy name doesn't help), but the two are serious rockers — their melodies are instant, and they careen off one another in dazzling, primitive fashion.
