Music: Classical

Adés and Berlioz

Hector Berlioz died in 1869, and Thomas Adés is still, at least by classical music standards, quite young, but both have raised the spirits and eyebrows of orchestra and opera aficionados, as tonight's pairing of some of each composer's grandest and most ambitious works illustrates. Though separated by generations and other stylistic and technological gulfs, these kindred spirits have each produced sweeping masterpieces. In a rare treat for American audiences, Adés visits from the UK to conduct the full program, including his own epic, America: A Prophecy.
