A new series of paintings by LA-based Cole Case, When We Did Believe in Magic and We Didn't Die is best described as autobiographical surrealism. With a writer's literary sensibility and a visual style combining rich saturated colors, folksy line-drawing, and a zeal for cognitive dissonance, Cole crafts a suite of images that both depict and obfuscate their own narrative content. A camping lantern is lit for reading Dune; an intimate table for two is cramped against a dominant brick wall; and the sunny grounds of a sculpture park are in fact a cemetery lawn. These and a host of other mismatched stories blend humor, fact, and fiction into a disarming series of possible truths.
