Art: Photography Karl Ferris: The Psychedelic Experience

The cover art of Jimi Hendrix's debut album, Are You Experienced?, is just as memorable as the guitar pyrotechnics inside. Using a Nikon fish-eye lens and infrared military film, English artist Karl Ferris immortalized a rock icon and established himself as one of the loudest voices in psychedelic photography. Influenced by his early studies of Pre-Raphaelite painting and encouraged to experiment by the Beatles' photographer, Robert Freeman, Ferris began pushing the limits of his medium, producing images with brilliant fluorescent colors and unusual angles. Hendrix was impressed, and once told Ferris, "You're doing with photography what I'm doing with music." This show at Mr. Musichead brings together shots from throughout his career.
