Note:
The Book as Such in the Russian Avant-Garde, a symposium related to the exhibit, will take place at the Getty Center's Museum Lecture Hall on February 5, 9:00am-5:00pm.
In Tango with Cows, the Getty Research Institute presents a concentrated display of unabridged books published in Russia between 1910 and 1917. Products of the turbulent, intra-revolutionary era, the tomes offer visual and literary representations of Russia's contemporaneous attitudes toward religion, tradition, and urbanization. The books also reflect the artists' complex relationship with modernism as an art form: while the country embraced metropolitan vitality and its creative implications, it simultaneously shunned the calamitous prospect of industrialization's effects on the people. Visitors also have the opportunity to examine reproductions of the books, an experience that illuminates the union between word and image.
