Cuban-born artist Enrique Martinez Celaya's oil-and-wax paintings and mixed-media sculptures offer a rare combination of vigorous, pre-Raphaelite style and pensive, academic deliberation. Though depicting a loosely poetic series of figures — including human, animal, and plant life — his refractive, elusive works resist narrative inferences because they are composed of heavily worked, multi-layered abstractions. His sculptures — one a bronze of a deer towing a landscape and another a seated woman formed out of burnt wood — make similar use of the tension between what is pictured and the element used to compose the image itself.
