Inspired by Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean ride, LA artist Paul McCarthy and his son Damon's video piece twists Disney's sanitized representation of seafaring rogues into an audacious display of grotesqueries. In the video portion of the work, Caribbean Pirates, a simulated invasion leads to amputations, gang bangs, and other crazed acts of brutality, in which chocolate sauce and condiments stand in for bodily fluids. Carried out with a carnivalesque zeal, the piece centers on themes familiar to the elder McCarthy's work: destruction, perversion, and mess.
