Largo at the Coronet Theater says…

If Dusseldorf-based pianist Volker Bertelmann (aka Hauschka) were a little girl, the piano would be his Barbie doll. And, man, does he know how to dress it up: the rule-breaking minimalist clamps wedges of leather, felt, and rubber between the strings. He prepares the hammers with aluminum paper, places crown corks on the strings, weaves guitar strings around the piano's guts, and holds everything down with gaffer tape. His arrangements sound orchestral, with singing strings and delicate layering, but he takes as much from electronica as from the classical canon. Progressive troubadour Tom Brosseau opens, performing new songs from his forthcoming follow-up to 2007's Cavalier (which featured Hauschka as a guest musician).
