Fascinated by homo-eroticism and inspired by mythology and classic fiction, Miami painter Hernan Bas' tableaux present an enchanted world of roaming teenage dandies, where spritely adolescents frolic by the sea, in swan-drawn seashell gondolas, or at New York City bathhouses. Unlike much of Bas' work from the past decade which centers on blooming love and innocence, several pieces showing at Sandroni Rey — such as Sun Burnt (Devil in the Desert) and Touch of Death — deal with aspects of mortality and pain.
