In 1936, Polish violinist Bronislaw Huberman formed the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra by recruiting the most talented and technically proficient soloists displaced by fascism. Since then, the esteemed cultural institution has attracted consummate classical musicians like Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, and Isaac Stern, while past conductors include Arturo Toscanini and Leonard Bernstein. Tonight's performance, conducted by the IPO's current music director Gustavo Dudamel, features Halil and Jubilee Games by Bernstein, as well as Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4. The concert presages Dudamel's imminent seizing of the LA Phil's reins, a gig that doesn't officially start until this coming April.
