Royal/T says…

Yakuza new-wave noir hijacks Royal/T tonight in a screening of the ex-con thriller Afraid to Die. Influenced by Antonioni, Fellini, and Visconti – director Yasuzo Masumura was a student of all three – the film is more stylish and restrained than your average mob flick. Its plot winds relentlessly, making cinematic rest stops for go-go geishas and old men with elaborate back tattoos. Takeo, a mobster on the road to a better life, is played by the intense Yukio Mishima, a Japanese writer who committed ritual suicide 10 years after playing the role.
