The Battle Over Citizen Kane is free and begins at 5pm.
A perennial feature of American cinema's best-of lists, this Shakespearean-grade epic was a thinly veiled character assassination on newspaper titan and extravagantly wealthy control freak, William Randolph Hearst. Its controversial writer, director, and star, Orson Welles, was a mere 24 when he wrought what would become both his greatest work, and essentially a career-ender — due mainly to the swift revenge taken by the livid, and still powerful, 74-year-old Hearst. Tonight's screening is preceded by a documentary outlining the making of, and coping with the fallout from, Citizen Kane, as well as an introduction by Mary Levkoff, curator of the ongoing LACMA exhibition featuring the private collection of art and artifacts (sorry, no wooden sleds) amassed by Hearst.
