It's not often that Angelenos have the chance to examine an original painting by Dutch Baroque master Johannes Vermeer. His surviving works are rare (he left behind only about 35 paintings), and are dispersed across the globe. But for three months, the Norton Simon Museum is displaying one of the provincial genre painter's quintessential images, A Lady Writing (c. 1665-66), on loan from the National Gallery of Art. It's a testament to Vermeer's expert use of lighting and color, and a prime example of his favorite subject matter: domestic interiors depicting scenes from everyday life.
