Whatever outfit they sport, leisurely activity they pursue, or unearthly landscape they inhabit, Coulis' men are never revealed as themselves (and neither are the women she depicts in other works). They are quasi-literary vessels into which the artist pours aspects of her own character and personal history; and their schematized, obsessively crisp surroundings heighten the surreality and cognitive dissonance of her projections.
