If the metal resurgence hasn't already jumped the shark, it's getting uncomfortably mainstream, and dyed-in-the-wool headbangers are retreating into increasingly esoteric and "extreme" microgenres. High on Fire were the vanguard of the latest wave of heavy riffage and have kept their sky-blackening, thrash-and-fury-fueled iron horse on track, pounding out snarling, hairy-chested anthems that owe more to Motörhead and Manilla Road than they do to Slayer or Metallica. At its black heart, this trio from Oakland is pure rock 'n roll, which is perhaps why it might outlast pop culture's fascination with Norwegian church burners.
