Each of the six artists assembled in this Samuel Freeman group exhibition is a master of the watercolor medium. Bucking tradition, both in terms of subject and style, Kim McCarty's deft, emotional, and delicate portrait-based compositions run parallel to Martin Mull's (yes, that one) intelligent, witty, and weighty painterliness. Meanwhile, Marcel Dzama's cartoon-influenced hipster ironies press well beyond the pastoral rep of their chosen medium, even as they wrangle its capricious properties.
