Marquetry is an ages-old technique of applying wood veneers to solid surfaces, popular among extremely wealthy Europeans in the time of Louis XIV. It involves painstakingly precise design and execution, patience, skill, and imagination, and yet has almost never enjoyed popularity in modern and contemporary art. This situation is something C4 Gallery artist William Tunberg — with his range of appreciations from conceptual theory and cheeky puns to advanced figure drawing and mixed-media assemblage — fully intends to alleviate. His work is crisp and smooth, unlike the roiling language of gesture it evokes; sharply fragmented shapes follow upon one another more like elements of drawings than sculpture, flirting with abstraction, and even abstract expressionism, while anchored by the tightly controlled process of their making.
