LA punk band X and the New York Dolls were damned from the get-go. For X — born of Venice Beach in the '70s, and brought to the light by Doors drummer Ray Manzarek — the problem was always a lack of interest in the band's nuanced approach to punk rock. The New York Dolls had the opposite dilemma, an overly active image (alternately cross-dressing and appearing as leather-clad commies), that scared off would-be buyers. This on top of a long and torrid string of deaths in the band by drugs and, in the case of founding lead guitarist and singer Johnny Thunders, suspected "foul play." Tonight at Club Nokia come see their torn and tattered remains, and give them some love, long overdue.
