Israeli filmmaker Ari Folman's version of memory lane is like none the world really has ever seen before. At the beginning of Waltz With Bashir, he realizes that he remembers almost nothing of Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon although he served as a solider in Beirut when the Lebanese Christian militia known as Phalangists murdered 800 Palestinians in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps. In his efforts to piece together the events of that day — conveyed in a painterly animation — he not only unearths his actual role in the massacre but the profound tricks humans can play on themselves when the truth is too hard to bear.
