Turner Prize winner Steve McQueen debuts his first feature film, the bleak and fearless Hunger. Already garnering the Camera d'Or and a host of other festival-circuit accolades, the film relates the story of IRA icon Bobby Sands' 1981 hunger strike in the name of political recognition for fellow prisoners. With little dialog outside a pivotal, single-shot exchange between Sands and his priest, the film moves its story through expertly orchestrated camerawork, indulgently visceral angles, and frames clearly informed by McQueen's art career. The actors and director both display excruciating patience, offering portrayals that capture the physical essence of pain and suffering alongside psychological insights into the anguish of self-sacrifice.
