Inspired by the sculptor Alexander Calder and his monumentally jovial aesthetic, the Calder Quartet blends the skill and repertoire of classical strings with a distinctly modern agility and adventurousness. The group is known both for collaborations with emerging and experimental artists and for incorporating unlikely electronic influences. Tonight's program stays true to form: joined by Gloria Cheng, the Quartet takes on Thomas Adès' "Piano Quintet," an elegantly avant-garde idyll that breaks all the rules, except the ones about beauty.
