Film City Streets (1931) and The Miracle Man (1932)

Tonight's pre-Code films enchant with against-the-grain gambles. In the striking Dashiell Hammett adaptation City Streets, heartthrob hero Gary Cooper becomes embroiled in underworld racketeering out of devotion to the stepdaughter (Sylvia Sidney) of a prominent mobster. Idiosyncratic and inspired in its gangland stylistics, the hard-boiler is built upon equivocal exchanges, suggestive settings, and ten off-screen snuff-outs. Norman McLeod's The Miracle Man pairs Sidney with Chester Morris as swindlers who relocate to a seaside town, where a Christ-like faith healer resides. The heartless sweethearts scheme to amass a fortune off their find, before the film's revelatory twist changes everything.
