Director Alain Resnais' interrogations of time and memory compelled his reinvention of narrative, culminating in the legendarily enigmatic Last Year in Marienbad. An unnamed man (Giorgio Albertazzi) accosts an unnamed woman (Delphine Seyrig) during a bourgeois hotel ball and tries to convince her that they were once lovers. Resnais imagines Alain Robbe-Grillet's circuitous script as an obscuring flurry of backdrop swaps and costume changes; events loop alongside the whims of memory, evoking a fluid surreality. Marienbad remains a spatial and temporal riddle without resolution, but it's well worth the wondering.
