Hayao Miyazaki's atypical anime films make for magical affairs. One of his first transcendent syntheses of science fiction and fairy tale, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind creates a nuked earth where Princess Nausicaä and her people of the Valley of the Wind strive against hostile surviving clans and fantastically colossal crustaceans. As the weight-of-the-world heroine, Nausicaä must negotiate an uneasy peace between these warring survivors. With a humanistic concern that has rarely infiltrated the animated ranks, Miyazaki's exquisitely made-up world is pure wonder.
