Farmlab grew out of artist Lauren Bon's lengthy experiment Not A Cornfield, in which a parcel of land near downtown was planted with corn and used as a public gathering place — a sort of ersatz town square. Today, Qingyun Ma, the dean of USC's School of Architecture, speaks as part of Farmlab's Public Salon series, addressing one of contemporary art and architecture's favorite topics: the complicated relationship between public, private, urban, and agricultural spaces. Ma's interdisciplinary approach to these issues has variously involved performance art, international eco-urbanism, and localized solutions for global problem-solving.
