- The Earrings of Madame de...
Mid-century German director Max Ophüls' legacy is scattered on both sides of the Atlantic. Ophüls' French masterpiece, The Earrings of Madame de…, fills its frames with ornate decoration and swooping, dreamlike camerawork in recounting the travels of (what else?) a pair of earrings. Ophüls' American film, Letter from an Unknown Woman, is remarkable for its fluid, florid tracking shots. The flashback-style storytelling shows how love cruelly eludes Joan Fontaine and Louis Jourdan.
