Film Modern Times (1936)

Ever the champion of the have-nots, Charlie Chaplin spoofs the inhumanity of industrialization in Modern Times. Reprising his role as the Tramp, Chaplin plays a cog in a factory assembly line. Driven mad by boredom, our hero falls in love with (who else?) an orphaned gamine played by Paulette Goddard, is confused for a communist, halts a prison break, and "sings" at a nightclub. The film's world of clinky, machine-made sounds and complicated doodads is one of the star's greatest (and funniest) legacies.
